Gas alternatives as efficient and sustainable energy solution for aquaculture

Today there are many industries that are looking for alternatives so that their operations have less impact on the environment. For this reason, Lipigas has developed an energy supply model, tailor-made for each client, which allows saving up to 15% in consumption and reducing CO2 emissions by up to 30%. One of the industries that has successfully implemented these alternatives is aquaculture.

Replacing some of the most polluting fuels is an imperative for different industries. This is why Lipigas has created a series of liquefied gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) solutions for the generation of steam or hot water at maximum efficiency in various companies in the aquaculture industry with successful results. Specifically, the company has developed a customized industrial plan (PPI) with specialist engineers who detect on-site opportunities for improvement in energy efficiency of customers, and then design the best solution for each case. Some of the largest salmon farms in our country have contracted this service, which offers a competitive alternative to replace FO6 and diesel. In fact, the projects implemented in the facilities of various companies in the industry have enabled them to reduce their base energy consumption by between 5% and 15%, as well as facilitating the path towards meeting sustainability goals by reducing CO2 emissions by between 18% and 30%, and particulate matter by more than 90%. “LPG and LNG are very versatile energies that are suitable for every stage of salmon production, and in general for any industry. We have been working with fish farmers for more than a decade and the experience has been very positive because we have been able to offer simple-to-implement alternatives that have contributed to their savings and sustainability goals. The key has been personalized service. With each one we have designed a solution tailored to their needs,” explains Lipigas’ head of large projects and energy solutions, Ariel Rodríguez. Some of the uses that have been given to LPG and LNG are the use of condensing boilers for heating water in fish farms, the conversion of outboard engines (LPG only) and the replacement of diesel generators for electricity generation. The company also offers the alternative of substituting diesel for LNG in long-distance transport to move products between fish farms and production plants. With these proposals among many others, Lipigas will be present at the next edition of AQUASUR 2024 together with more than 350 national and global exhibitors. It should also be noted that Lipigas is working on another series of solutions that seek to provide access to renewable energies, which can be used in the aquaculture industry. For example, the company is in the process of building the first renewable liquefied natural gas (LNG-R) plant in South America, which will be located in Ñuble. This will operate on biogas generated from organic waste in a circular economy process. With this project, which they expect to be operating by the end of 2024, they will be able to develop solutions for their end customers with a fuel that is carbon neutral and uses the same infrastructure as the existing LNG. In the same line, the company closed an agreement for the purchase of Bio LPG -which it expects to start importing in 2028- a fuel that is also carbon neutral produced from vegetable and animal waste that will allow it to decarbonize the operation of different types of customers at competitive prices. Both fuels fulfill the same function as current fuels, but their origin is renewable, so they are carbon neutral in their life cycle.
