With presentations by prominent panelists, the Salmon Summit 2024 event was held on Wednesday 10 May at the Teatro del Lago in Frutillar, where political and economic leaders met to discuss the future of Chilean salmon farming to 2050.

The event was attended by representatives of Aquasur, Paula Miranda, manager of the fair, and Rodrigo Lobo, general manager of Fisa (a). In the speakers’ section, Eduardo Frei, former president of Chile; former senator Guido Girardi, executive vice-president of the foundation Encuentros del Futuro; Liesbeth van de Meer, director of Oceana Chile; Ricardo Mewes, president of the CPC; Raphael Bergoeing, president of the National Commission for Evaluation and Productivity; Josefa Monge, president of the Business Council of System B and Rodrigo Yáñez, secretary general of Sofofa..

On the occasion, the president of SalmonChile, the organiser of the event, recalled “very valuable people from the salmon farming world, who are no longer with us today, who left their mark, remember Felipe Cubillos, Humberto Fischer, Victor Hugo Puchi and Gonzalo Vial”.

He also explained that in the 40-year history of salmon farming, “we want to project ourselves and grow responsibly to 2050, we do not want them to make our activity disappear or diminish, we want them to listen to us, to talk to us and in this way contribute to the growth of Chile”.

Along the same lines, he analysed that “unfortunately there are many negative signals, a lack of confidence, a lack of understanding and knowledge of what we do. We need certainty in order to move forward. There is a lack of understanding of the value of our industry, the people of the south are being ignored and we are drowning in the face of competition.

Finally, he stated that the aim of the seminar was for “powerful leaders, academics, to help us design the way forward for salmon 2050. We don’t want to listen to each other, we want to listen to others, even if they are critical or have a different view, we value diversity”.
